2016 Bath Digital Festival Workshop.

Barry Lewis and myself conducted a gaming session and workshop in the City of Bath College for the 2016 Bath Digital Festival. The session involved helping attendees to the session create their own flappy-bird clones using Scratch, and there were also computers available with demonstrations of similar applications that Barry Lewis and I had created, each with unique ideas and twists, to help give the attendees some inspiration for their Scratch games.

The main thing we wanted to convey with the workshop is that coding can be fun and to show that programming, even programming just simple application using beginner/entry level tools, can be a unique artistic expression of a developer with the right imagination.

The session was very popular at the event, and although aimed at younger people, we had attendees to the session of all ages and received a lot of positive feedback from all involved in the sessions. It was incredibly satisfying to see so many people proudly sharing their flappy-bird clones and how they'd added their own twists, and generally really finding programming as something fun.

I would most likely be interested in conducting a similar session again as I feel it is a great way to generate interest and passion for the subject in general, and I did enjoy doing this one.

Gaming Session & Scratch Workshop 2016

Due to how busy the event was, we only really managed to take photos when we were setting up for the festival and near the end, when the workshop was coming to an end. We created our own banners and a pseudo-company name to be able to present professionally and this was one of the first collaborative ventures that we undertook as a team that made us want to create a company in development together.

Although we do these things because we enjoy them, sometimes the things we do are mentioned in the press and in articles on websites.

Although many of these articles are now dead-links due to the event happening in 2016, there is still a live link to the City of Bath College website where they reported on the event in which we are mentioned by name.

Key Points (TL;DR):

KEY POINT 1

First Proper Collaboration with Barry Lewis

This was the first time that I collaborated and worked as a pseudo-company with Barry Lewis in a serious manner and was where we discovered that we worked well as a team and enjoyed developing together.

KEY POINT 2

Helped General Public to Create a Game with Scratch

Attendees to our session were not only able to play some of our applications for inspiration, but were also helping people create their own unique twist of a flappy-bird clone using Scratch.

KEY POINT 3

Displayed Projects for Inspiration

Displayed projects at this workshop and game session were Bee Tapper and Space-Pods, as these are both flappy-bird clones with unique twists, and were used to inspire ideas by example.
